In From Image to Interaction, Arjen Mulder performs an original examination of the 500-year history of interactive art. He portrays Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Kandinsky, Mondriaan and Paul Klee as great media theorists who laid the foundations for today’s interactive art, whose models are still used today in video art, machine art, digital art, media art and even “the art formerly known as media art.” At the same time, Mulder shows how visual culture has failed to connect to contemporary art.
Arjen Mulder will discuss his book in conversation with Siebe Thissen at the presentation, to take place at the Witte de With arts center. Art historian and researcher Katja Kwastek is going to discuss the relations between new media art and more traditional forms of visual art proposed by Mulder, focusing on the concepts of interaction and interactivity. She will ask in how far the focus on process and interaction presents a challenge to theories of aesthetic experience and art historical methodology alike. Frits Gierstberg will deliver critical commentaries on the book's themes from his perspective as head of exhibitions of the Nederlands Fotomuseum in Rotterdam. Of course, the audience will have an opportunity to ask questions and to purchase signed and unsigned copies of the English and Dutch editions of the book.
We will then cross the street to the V2_ exhibition space for a spectacular audiovisual finale in the form of Evolving Spark Network, an interactive installation by the composer and artist Edwin van der Heide.
