In 2010 Hyun Yeu took out a loan for his men's collection Ado Les Scents, which he presented during the Amsterdam International Fashion Week in July of 2010. The Materiaalfonds is celebrating Hyun Yey for his exceptional choice of materials.
Anne-Grethe Filtenborg, a teacher of Yeu's at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, noted that Yeu was a very focused and dedicated designer, with an almost mathematical process of working. Fashion is often a fine balance between business and poetry.
Hyun Yeu was born in South Korea and was expected to take over his father's business when he got older. In order to do this, he went to business school in Australia and later got a job working at a bank. He eventually grew tired of his work in the bank industry and wanted to do something more creative. In his second job working at an architecture firm he came upon DUTCH magazine, and discovered the Dutch fashion aesthetic and Viktor and Rolf. This is when he decided, rather naively as he claims, that he would study fashion design in the Netherlands. Since graduating from the Rietveld Academy's fashion design program, he has presented six seasons of his collection.
Ado Les Scents is a collection that symbolizes the point that Yeu is at in his career. Although he graduated from design school at the age of 33, he still feels like a young designer, that he is still in that space between childhood and adulthood. During the ceremony, pants that Yeu had designed were hanging on hooks from the ceiling. When asked why he chose pants, he said that men's designers always focus on jackets, and that he wanted the focus to be on something that is often overlooked.
