Design Camp Call

A key project in Dott 07 will be an international design camp in which teams of young designers from many countries, spanning multiple disciplines, will develop sustainable tourism ideas for (and with) specific North East locations and communities.

Teams of between six and eight designers and artists will work in each of six locations across the North East of England.

Each design team will be asked to investigate how sustainable tourism might be developed and implemented as a sustainable enterprise in a real place. Working with local partners, your tasks will be to document what kinds of value reside in that locality;

  • Describe how a visitor might experience this value in new ways
  • Create an opportunity map of places, or services, to be designed
  • Create artefacts and/or storyboard of a proposed new service or situation
  • Describe the business or enterprise model that would make your proposal sustainable.

PROJECTS

  • Urban Camping

Exploring the concept of urban camping and ‘camp&ride’ schemes as a model for sustainable urban tourism.

  • Allendale Industrial Heritage

Working with the rural community and industrial heritage of the North Pennines to see how tourism can be developed sustainably in this remote spot.

  • Landlines

Designing the Agricultural Landscape. How can minor changes to farming procedures change the face of the landscape? Working with farmers using existing resources to change the view from the windows of mainline trains throughout the northeast, revealing the roles of farmers as producers and custodians of the landscape.

  • Weardale Disused Railway

Linking the site of the birth of railways with a proposed ‘Eco-village’ development through innovative design solutions.

  • Wind Power in the Landscape

Exploring the concept of power generation as visual spectacle and tourist attraction. Can wind power have a positive effect on the landscape and tourism?

Dott Design Camp is a unique opportunity to exchange ideas and practice with designers and artists from other countries, engage with international domain experts and leaders in a variety of design fields and develop a real-life, sustainable project.

The project is open to young designers, senior students and early career professionals, visual artists, architects and young professionals in related creative fields, from all countries.
Design Camp runs in North East England from the 12th – 21st July 2007.
