A discussion on how the use of ICT allows different kinds of participation and collaboration between cities and citizens, effectively reinventing new forms of citizenship.
While many cities struggle with the constraints of the economic crisis and the raising demands of services, others take full advantage of the opportunities that ICT provides in terms collecting ideas, providing advanced services through apps, using Open Data to spur innovation, fostering self-organizing communities that solve real problems and supporting new social entrepreneurship initiatives through crowdfunding.
This studentsprogram (in coöperation with the City of Amsterdam, PICNIC and World Smart Capital) aims at providing a light on this new universe with the best experiences from the US and Europe and opening the discussion on the road ahead.

- Thomas Krämer (Ontopica Bonn / Germany) I bring crowdsourcing in urban and regional planning
Thomas Krämer, 34, is a co-founder of ontopica GmbH, Bonn, Germany. After his Master in Sociology and Computing in the Humanities he specialised on e-participation systems at Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems IAIS. In recent years he focussed on the organisational aspects of socio-technical systems and on spreading crowdsourcing in urban and regional planning practise. Feel free to change / shorten / replace.
- A’yen Tran (ChangebyUs New York / US) I bring interactive experiences for physical and mobile space
A’yen Tran is an Interactive Project Manager for Local Projects, where she produces interactive experiences in physical, online and mobile space.
Her most recent work includes producing and managing Change by Us, a new multi-city social platform for civic engagement and its predecessor, Give a Minute.
She produced the 9/11 Memorial Names Arrangement Algorithm and Make History, a website to crowdsource the world’s images of 9/11 for the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. Before joining Local Projects, she produced large-scale interactive art and media projects for non-profits and artists. She directed logistics and external relations for artist Swoon’s nautical art installations and voyages with Deitch Projects, and served as Online Director for non-profit organization Seeds of Peace.
She has presented and installed work at PS1, MASSMoCA, Conflux, Flux Factory. A’yen has spoken at Livable Memphis' Annual Summit, CEOs for Cities National Meeting in Chicago and Urban Design Week in New York. She holds a B.A from Columbia University.
- Esteve Almirall (ESADE Barcelona / Spain) I bring our passion translating Open Innovation to the Public Sector, particularly to Smart Cities
Esteve Almirall serves as Associate Professor in Esade Business Schoool and UPF (Universitat Pompeu Fabra) focusing his research on Innovation and Innovation Management where he has more than 30 publications on the field. His work has been referenced in HBR and he is a frequent speaker in conferences around Innovation, Smart Cities, Living Labs and Open Data/Gov.
His background is a mix of Management Science (PhD) and Computer Science (MSc, MRes). Esteve is also highly involved in European Projects and EU organizations being Council Member of the ENoLL (European Network of Living Labs) and coordinating/participating in some EU projects on Innovation and Smart Cities, such as Open Cities and Commons for Europe - Code for Europe.
Esteve is fascinated for participating in this new adventure of contributing to change how the Public Sector and particularly City administrations relate to citizens.

- Andrew Nash (GreenCityStreets Vienna / Austria) I bring GreenCityStreets.com and a desire to share ideas for making cities more livable and sustainable
I specialize in transportation and city planning project development and management. Including: conceptual development, project planning and evaluation, information technology applications in planning, multi-media communications, technical editing and translation.
My current project is GreenCityStreets.com. It combines an on-line game, social network and best practices library (wiki) to help improve citizen involvement in public transport planning. The project was awarded a prize as the most innovative project submitted for the Die Stadt 2020 Program in Vienna.
I have worked as a researcher at the ETH Zurich's Institute for Transport Planning and Systems (IVT) focusing on public and railway transport.
I started my career in San Francisco working for transport planning consulting firms, then public agencies including the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority, Caltrain Commuter Rail and served as Executive Director of the San Francisco County Transportation Authority.
I attended UC Berkeley where I obtained masters degrees in City Planning and Civil Engineering.
