STEIM organises: a three-day workshop aimed at musicians and media artists who are beginners with MaxMSP, or who are familiar with MaxMSP version 4 and wish to learn about what`s new in Max 5. Topics include dataflow programming, message passing and processing, user interface design, basic digital synthesis and sample manipulation, data storage and retrieval, and debugging and problem solving. Day 1 will be for beginners only, and is intended to provide an introduction to Max programming and MSP digital audio. Days 2 and 3 will follow on from the material covered in Day 1, and will cover features which are new in Max 5 or which have changed dramatically since Max 4. This workshop will not cover Jitter, and will not go into detail of advanced synthesis or sound processing techniques.
Participants are required to being their own laptop (Windows or Macintosh) with MaxMSP installed; the software can be fully used in demonstration mode for 30 days after installation. The workshop hours will be from 10:00h to 17:00h.
Note that beginners are required to attend the first day! When registering mention specifically if you want to attend the full workshop or only day 2+3.

Bio
Nick Rothwell is a software architect, programmer, composer and sound designer, with work encompassing the technical and artistic disciplines. He has worked with artists and organisations internationally including: Wayne McGregor/Random Dance (Sadler`s Wells, Royal Opera House), Ballett Frankfurt (choreographer: Michael Klien), Vienna Volksoper (choreographic display software), Daghdha Dance (data and artificial consciousness design for a media sculpture/installation), Ricochet Dance Company, Margie Medlin (Wellcome Trust-funded "Quartet" media/performance project at ZKM Karlsruhe, STEIM Amsterdam, Hartware MedienKunstVerein Dortmund, ICA London), Laurie Booth (live quadraphonic score performed in Brighton Festival, Dance Umbrella and New Territories), body>data>space (Prague, Paris, London). He has also lectured and taught interactive media systems at various institutions (most recently Columbia University, New York) and writes for various music technology magazines.
