The DoPRom
The DoPRom was published in the Storage Mania issue (Vol 8 #1) of the Mediamatic Magazine in the summer of 1994. The interactive CD-Rom presents the proceedings of the first Doors of Perception conference, exploring the future of information technology and multimedia design under 8 main themes. Now, 30 years of technological progress later, we invite you to come and discover the revolutionary ideas that emerged in the time when the Internet was becoming more accessible to the public. The future is now.
Doors of Perception Conference
Doors of Perception, was a series of conferences relating to design, technology and the future. The first conference, a collaboration between the Netherlands Design Institute and Mediamatic, was held in Amsterdam in October 1993 at the RAI convention center. It was a groundbreaking conference at which leading thinkers from the fields of graphic and industrial design, architecture, information technology, philosophy, computer science, business and media assembled to consider the culture and economic challenges of interactivity, the challenge of "smart objects" and "smart space" as computing and communication increasingly permeate the environment and the role of design in turning information into knowledge and within new forms of industrial organization.
Archives at Risk: Seeking Shelter
In the foyer of the Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam, you can now see a presentation surrounding the archive of Doors of Perception conference. It is the fourth installation of the campaign Archives at Risk: Seeking Shelter, in which Network Archives Design and Digital Culture draws attention to the problem that without a national policy and structural budget, many design archives will be lost. The archive contains valuable information that sheds light on this extraordinary period of technological innovation in the nineties, both in the Netherlands and internationally. Read more about the presentation on Nieuwe Instituut's website.
