The Watchers investigates the boundaries between fact and fiction, construct and coincidence, live and recording. The performance is part of Street Canvas Festival.
Butler constructed six areas of performances in different buildings around the Oude Groenmarkt in Haarlem. The public was invited to listen to and watch these areas using special infrared binoculars, a piece of technology designed by Mediamatic. This way, you could see everything you hear, and you hear everything you see.
The entire space becomes a stage, a theatrical experience linking the watchers and the watched. The Watchers plays with boundaries. What is fiction? What is reality? What is recorded? What is live? What is staged? What is coincidental? What is constructed?
The Watchers took place on October 7th. The piece was performed five times: at 5.30pm, 6.30pm, 7.30pm, 9.30pm and 10.15pm. The locations were all on or around the Oude Groenmarkt in Haarlem. This event was part of Street Canvas Festival.
