Robot Workshop
On april 8 and 9, 2011, we organise another Robot Workshop, led by trainers Ralf Schreiber and Christian Faubel. Since 2006 they host workshops in which they surprise participants with their creative ideas for minimalistic robots, made with minimal material and small technical foreknowledge. During the first day participants solder the circuit and work on the mechanical aspects of the robot. The next day their small moving robots are customized.
Me trane gaan overal: The Dushi Kimberley Experience
On April 8 we celebrate the opening of the exhibition Me trane gaan overal: The Dushi Kimberley Experience. This exhibition gives an insight in the life of Kimberly K, from Rotterdam. She rapidly became an online cult icon with her presence on Twitter and Facebook. Besides earlier published online work, the exhibition contains special memorabilia and more than ten art works made by Dushi Kimberly herself. It was the first time she presented work in the offline rather than online world.
Pièce de Résistance
In collaboration with Partizan Publik, Mediamatic organizes the exhibition Pièce de Résistance: a marketplace for personal resistance stories and -objects. During 4 months we receive a constant flow of anecdotes and objects of resistance. From the Second World War on till now, originating in the Netherlands or abroad.
As part of the Pièce de Résistance exhibition Tobias Leingruber of the FAT lab is invited to host a Facebook workshop. During this workshop you learn some tricks to customize your Facebook profile: (illegal) things you wouldn't normally do to your Facebook profile.
Is dit jouw huis?
In a special supplement to the Dutch newspaper Het Parool on May 4 and 5, citizens of Amsterdam can search for their home in a list of homes out of which Jews were deported during the Second World War. When people find their home, they can make a picture of it, put it on the website of the Jewish Monument and put it on the wall in Mediamatic's Pièce de Résistance exhibition.
L.A. Noire in de Zuiderkerk
On May 19 Mediamatic organizes the European launch of Rockstars L.A Noire in the Zuiderkerk, Amsterdam. This detective game uses face recognition techniques in a way that was never done before. Because of this, psychology becomes very important in playing this game. Also, you can look around in Los Angeles during the 1940's. The game was discussed and tested by Dirk van Weelden, Rockstar and the National Historical Museum and, of course, visitors could play the game as well.
Infographics about budget cuts in the cultural field
As a reaction to the budget cuts in the cultural field, announced by the government, Mediamatic started a poster campaign. These infographics show the modest amount of money that is spend in the arts sector, in comparison to other expenses made by the government and consumers. The posters are distributed around Amsterdam and The Hague during the Mars der Beschaving. They got reprinted in Het Parool and published during the Visibile Data exhibition in Bratislava.
Over Datum Eetclub
In the summer of 2011 Mediamatic starts battling food waste. We cook dinners with expired, but very nice products. The evenings are a big success and we extend the concept after the summer. Every week visitors, together with a cook, prepare a feast with the expired products they brought to the kitchen themselves. Local shops donate their food as well. On December 20, the last edition of the Over Datum Eetclub takes place: a christmas dinner.
In collaboration with the inspiring Michelin star chef Pascal Jalhay, Mediamatic organizes a fundraising Over Datum Eetclub for Giro555, during the Week of the Horn. Mediamatic Lab develops the website overdatum.org with a DIY package, pictures, stories and recipes.
Mushroom Paradise
On September 24 the Mushroom Paradise opens its doors in the Mediamatic Bank. One of the big challenges of the 21st century is the transformation to a more eco-friendly and self-sufficient society. Mycelium (the roots of mushrooms) can be used to grow biodegradable material that could replace styrofoam. Mushroom Paradise is the first step towards a bigger design initiative. Mediamatic wants to stimulate the cultural and artistic potential of innovative design-solutions and biodegradable material. Myceliums is the new plastic!
During Mushroom Paradise, visitors can participate in workshops in which they learn how to make substrate in our self build cleanroom. Mushrooms can grow out of this substrate (a mix of straw, sawdust or rice flour). Participants of the workshop can take the substrate home and watch the mushrooms pop up in their own living room. Participants also experience what it means to work in such a clean environment.
On a bright late summer day we go, together with mushroom expert Mark Janssen, to Hollandsche Rading to search for eatable mushrooms. Participants learn to determine mushrooms and recognize toxic ones. At the end of the day they go to Mediamatic with a basket full of mushrooms to prepare a tasty meal.
Tinkebell presents Save the World!
On November 13 Tinkebell presents four interventions that will save the world at Mediamatic. This presentation is part of Tinkebell's Save the world project: twelve worldwide interventions to explore what happens when we transfer our (Western) point of view to other cultures.
Museumnacht 2011
During the Museum night on November 5 visitors have to hand in a bio-sample. This bio-sample is tagged with a RFID chip and linked to the visitor's online profile. Rapidly bacteria start to grow. Images of the petri dishes appear on their profiles. One can retrace which bacteria belongs to whom with a RFID reader in the exhibition space.
Schommelclub
Six swings hang from a 18 meters high roof construction in Mediamatic's factory hall. Mediamatic reopens the monumental Van Gendthallen, unoccupied for years, to the public. During the christmas holidays it starts the Mediamatic Schommelclub. Swinging for all ages, with live music.
