Cakehouse, het Antwerps kunstenaarsinitiatief opgericht door Lieven Segers en Michèle Matyn, focust in de tentoonstelling The tragic and the funny meet again op het brandpunt van humor en tragiek. Die thematiek wordt voortgezet in een speciaal filmprogramma, dat dicht tegen de tentoonstelling en haar kunstenaars aanschuurt. Kunstenaar, filmmaker en curator Lieven Segers, die naast de expositie ook het filmprogramma heeft samengesteld, geeft tekst en uitleg bij zijn persoonlijke keuzes.

Who I Am and What I Want (2005, 7.23’, Engels gesproken)
door: David Shrigley en Chris Shepherd
In een eenvoudige tekenstijl op een spierwitte achtergrond verbeelden kunstenaar David Shrigley en filmmaker Chris Shepherd de geesteswereld van een getroebleerde jongeman. Hun snelle animatie, agressief en komisch tegelijk, geeft een bevreemdende analyse van de menselijke natuur.
Palms (2007, 59’, Engels gesproken)

De Duitse kunstenaar John Bock maakte furore met onvoorspelbare en groteske performances, films en video’s, waarin kunst, politiek en maatschappijkritiek op absurde wijze samensmelten. Zijn groots opgezette Palms, een op film noir geïnspireerde road movie, volgt twee Duitse moordenaars op hun tocht door het landschap van Zuid-Californië.

Fred in zijn eeuwige storm (2007, 52’, Nederlands gesproken)

In Antwerpen is Fred Bervoets al jarenlang een levende legende. Naar aanleiding van zijn 65e verjaardag, zijn laatste maanden als docent aan de Academie van Antwerpen en zijn hommage in het Museum voor Hedendaagse Kunst Antwerpen werd de kunstenaar vijf maanden lang gevolgd door Lieven Segers. Het resultaat is een documentaire die de kenmerken draagt van Bervoets’ schilderijen: weerbarstig, geconcentreerd, onberekenbaar, provocerend, intuïtief en eerlijk.

Cakehouse, the Antwerp artists’ initiative founded by Lieven Segers and Michèle Matyn, focuses on the intersection point of humour and tragedy in the exhibition The tragic and the funny meet again. The theme is continued in a special film programme that sits shoulder to shoulder with the exhibition and its artists. The artist, film maker and curator Lieven Segers, who curated the exhibition as well as the film programme, explains the whys and wherefores of his personal choices.

In simple drawings on a stark white background the artist David Shrigley and film maker Chris Shepherd represent the mind of a troubled young man. Their fast animation, aggressive and funny at the same time, leads to an alienating analysis of human nature.
Palms (2007, 59’, English spoken)

The German artist John Bock caused a furore with unpredictable and grotesque performances, films and videos, in which art, politics and social criticism are absurdly merged. His large-scale Palms, a road movie inspired by film noir, follows two German murderers on their journey through the South-Californian landscape.

In Antwerp Fred Bervoets has been a living legend for years. In connection with his 65th birthday, his last months as a teacher at the Academie van Antwerpen and his homage in the Museum voor Hedendaagse Kunst Antwerpen the artist was filmed for five months by film maker Lieven Segers. This generated a documentary that bears characteristics of Bervoets’ paintings: recalcitrant, concentrated, unpredictable, provocative, intuitive and honest.
