In the past fifteen years that Ms. Fraser has exhibited her work, she is largely known for presenting paintings on pristinely prepared canvases. One of the most successful US painters at utilizing an expanse of white space, she presents a suggested minimalism, but often with humorous twists. With this new body of work on paper, what was once a slow and painstaking painting process, has evolved into a much more automatic approach, described by the artist as monuments to moments. In contrast to the artist’s source material of images, i.e. graphs, pie charts and color wheels, these compositions resonate immediate energy and resist strict, accurate or logical measurements. With her continued interest in the historical status of painting, this current body of work also takes focus on the infinitely complex subject of color, in particular the fallibility of color systems.
