presentation:

Smell, Memory and Dementia

Odorama 17 - with Dr. Cretien van Campen, Dr. Jos van Campen, Carlijn Stevens, Sandra Schouten

8 Jun 2017

Scents are excellent keys to open doors and hatches in our memory. Even for people with dementia, scents can trigger youth memories. How do you bring back the memories of people that suffer from dementia? This edition of Odorama is all about the power of scents in the care of dementia patients.

Dr. Cretien van Campen

Dr. Cretien van Campen is a researcher of aging and well-being at the Netherlands Institute for Social Research. He is currently engaged in national and international studies of art and long term care, and policies for the well-being of elderly people. He will introduce us to his latest book The Proust Effect: The Senses as Doorways to Lost Memories. Are scents connected to certain types of memory? And why do scents evoke different memories in younger and older generations?

Dr. Jos van Campen

Dr. Jos van Campen is a clinical geriatrician at Slotervaartziekenhuis. For Odorama, Jos will give a medical introduction into the topic of dementia and the sense of smell. In his story he will include the anatomy of the nose, as well as what the act of smelling does to the brain. How does dementia influence the sense of smell? And how can scent trigger memory?

Sandra Schouten

Sandra Schouten is the artist behind Het Huis van Proeven, an initiative that tells stories with food and smell. Her work moves between Social Design, Community Art and Food Art. The food and smell is no end in itself, but a means of interaction. The theatrical setting leads towards an intense experience, new conversations and discoveries. She will talk about how it is possible to use smell to make contact with people with dementia, connect with them in a playful living environment and use it as part of a multisensory way to share meaningful experiences together with food.
