A Quantum Navigation Dance Workshop

How can we practice home coming together as a flock of pigeons? How can we find our way? by sensing the geomagnetic field, and by  being attentive to each other's movements? In Fly like a pigeon: a quantum navigation dance workshop, you will practice becoming a quantum pigeon. Come and join choreographer Marjolein Vogels and scientist Esmee Geerken and learn to soar high like our fellow flighted friends!

Fly like a pigeon

Recently, it was discovered that pigeons are able to observe Earth’s magnetic field,  by making use of quantum effects. In short; magnetoreceptors in the pigeon's eye  allow the pigeon to ‘see’ Earth’s magnetic field, based on the quantum spins of so called radical pairs in the eye of the pigeon.

In this speculative Dance-Science workshop, you will learn more about quantum navigation, allowing you to re-activate your own magnetoreceptors, and learn how to navigate by observing the poles of our spinning home planet.

In a movement training led by choreographer Marjolein Vogels, you will practice your quantum skills: spread your wings and learn how to flock like pigeons. At the end of the workshop, we will gather in a pigeon performance, and after this, you will be set free, now able to navigate challenges such as geomagnetic reversals and finding your way through Museum Nacht!

Marjolein Vogels

Marjolein Vogels (1984) is a Dutch modern dancer. She is also an artistic director of dance and performance platform WhyNot, performer, choreographer, teacher, programmer.

Esmee Geerken

Esmee Geerken is a Dutch artist and Earth scientist, with a main expertise in biomineralization and paleoceanography. After defending her dissertation entitled Elements in foraminiferal shells as recorders of past climates in December 2019, Esmee now combines her interdisciplinairy background in an artistic practice influenced by geology, chemistry and philosophy. Her work playfully questions our perception of the obvious – the curvature of the Earth, and the peculiar – how organisms (like us) build their shells.

Information

Fly like a pigeon: a quantum navigation dance workshop will run during Museum night 2022, on November 5th.

You are welcome to join the 20 minute workshops at Mediamatic Biotoop.
