MYCELIUM FACADE
How can we integrate mycelium into people's lives?
I have researched a way to break down the barrier between
static building elements and the natural world. Typically,
facades are seen as a solid border between the outdoor environment
and the indoor human world. In the Netherlands,
brick walls serve as the divider between these two worlds.
However, by adding an additional layer of mycelium to these
brick walls, we can blur the separation between these
worlds. This approach can help people connect with their
natural surroundings and view their building as a living entity.
This process involves three stages:
Placing mycelium blocks on the brick wall grid all over the
facade.
Covering the blocks with wood to promote growth and enhance
their strength.
Removing the wood layer to expose the mycelium to the
outside world.
This innovative approach allows people to experience facades
in a completely new way, creating a unique aesthetic
that combines natural patterns with the traditional grid of
brick walls. This approach reflects our transition towards a
more nature-inclusive world.
