Meet-a-Maker is a 30-minute session to have a one-on-one talk with artists currently working at Mediamatic. We are lucky to be inspired by the many artists who work and stay with us for exhibitions, residencies and workshops. We welcome you to meet them and be inspired as well!

This Meet-a-Maker is part of Mediamatic's Japanese Knotweed Season program. Knotweed is a fast-growing plant known in Europe for its intrusive properties. What many do not know, however, is that this plant species has a host of positive properties. During the festival we will explore how to live in harmony with this controversial plant.

About the artist

Janneke de Lange is a designer who graduated from Design Academy Eindhoven. Her work "FRUITURE NURSERY" will be displayed at Mediamatic during Japanese Knotweed Festival 2024.

The project "FRUITURE NURSERY" is a blend of two passions: greenhouses and tropical fruits. Since childhood, I have been in love with greenhouses, particularly botanical gardens, they are magical to me. Stepping into a glass palace on a chilly day transports me to another reality—a carefully curated jungle filled with thick, warm tropical air and the intoxicating scent of greenery and moist soil. The glass domes are constructed using the copper foil technique. By cutting and binding the textiles from the trolley the base of the nurseries are formed.

The other part of the project focuses on the design of the interior facilities within the glass dome that forms the greenhouse, the architecture within the architecture. To bring this world to life, a collection of porcelain scale models was made using the wheel throwing technique and fruit-shaped moulds.

Topics

  • Botany: Plant identification, plant adaptations, 'invasive' plant species.
  • Glass shape and design: Copper foil technique.
  • Landscaping and design of interior facilities: Botanical gardens and greenhouses.
  • Sensory experiences
  • Use and shape of porcelain
  • Material Research: Sustainable materials and design, using natural materials in art and design, the life cycle of materials, the environmental impact of different materials, exploring new and innovative materials.
