Freezing Favela
Freezing Favela is a temporary city at Mediamatic Fabriek. The Fabriek is situated in the Van Gendthallen on Oostenburg, Amsterdam. The space is big, unheated, and the roof leaks. Designers, cooks and other makers have been given the possibility to claim part of this space as their own. They work autonomously from their workshop- or project space, but like in any other community, materials, space, and functions have to be shared. Favela citizens are making tosti's from scratch, paper from cow dung, furniture from cardboard, and food from our aquaponics farm. They give workshops, organize get-togethers, and serve food.
Activities
White Trash Liquor Factory
Nothing is more relaxing after a good meal than some fine spirits. Local organic trash is transformed into vodka and fire water in the White Trash Liquor Factory. You'll never run out of alcohol again if you learn to make your own. Workshops start at 13:00, 15:00 and 17:00.
Cherry Pear
Cherry Pear is a Trash Lab project dedicated to repair chairs by giving them a new personality and function and help them find a new place in a new home. Favela visitors can donate broken chairs to the Trash Lab and/or ideas to repair the chairs. Trash Lab will repair the chairs and display them during the day. Later visitors can also purchase repaired chairs from the Trash Lab.
Make bricks from old newspapers
Pigeons are powerful creatures, according to Arne Hendriks. Help build a pigeon tower with bricks made from old newspapers. This therapeutic process involves tearing hundreds of newspapers to shreds. Add a little water, let 'm dry, and see the stones form.
Make & eat fresh pasta
Mould the dough and form it into your favorite pasta shape with Robert & Andrea of Favelous. The chefs will cook it and serve it with a sauce of your choice. Price:
€5,50 per portion (€0,50 discount if you help Arne produce at least 5 paper bricks).
Aquaponics-farm
Everyone has to eat, also the Freezing Favela citizens. An aquaponics system is a very sustainable way to produce food in the city. Plants and fish live together in one system, and help each other survive. Today our aquaponics team will teach you how to make your own room-sized edition of the aquaponics system, a miniponics. Workshops start at 13:00, 15:00 and 17:00.
Fool's Gold Workshops
What determines the true value of a piece of jewelry? During the workshops in the Fool's Gold pavilion you'll learn how to make jewelry from the most diverse materials. Today we're making earrings from messing. Tickets cost €10,- excluding membership. Workshops start at 13:00 and 15:00.
Build the Tostifabriek stables
Have you always been curious about farming in the city? In about a month, two cows and two pigs will arrive at the Tostifabriek. Today we'll start building the stables for the animals. Lend a helping hand!
Something yeast in the upper chamber
In the Hot Love Nest Derk Peter creates warmth from trash. He will explain why, and gives a meaning to compost.
Favela Sauna
The Favela Sauna team will start building the base for the sauna's mosaic floor.

This day is part of 24H Oost. Entrance: a valid membership. You can become a member for €5,-. For 4 weeks, this gives you free entrance to our exhibition and discounts on events. Location: Mediamatic Fabriek, VOC-Kade 10-12, Oostenburg Amsterdam. Doors open at 12:00. There are three chances to participate in each workshop. The first round of workshops is at 13:00, the second at 15:00, and the final round is at 17:00. The Fool's Gold workshop will not take place at 17:00. There are guided tours every hour on the hour. If you don't like guided tours or someone telling you what to do, feel free to wander around yourself.
