Regeneration - Biotalk was a collaboration between Transnatural and Mediamatic and consisted of two nights full of exciting talks and projects revolving around the topic of restoring and revitalizing our ecology. Part of Transnatural’s exhibition Regeneration was on show during the evening.

Talks
Eric Geboers - The Salt Project
Desertification causes large areas of arable ground to vanish. On the long term, this phenomenon, together with the continuous growth of the earth’s population, will generate a problematic situation. The Salt Project tries to offer a possible solution to this problem by means of architecture built from seawater. Architect/ designer Eric Geboers discussed The Salt Project’s research and progress so far.
Sadly we have to inform you that Ivan Henriques can not join this evening!
Ivan Henriques - Caravel
Microbial Fuel Cells, or MFC’s, are devices that use bacteria in wastewater as the catalyst to oxidise organic matter and generate electricity. Ivan Henriques developed Caravel, a floating mobile robotic structure which harvests and stores energy from these MFC’s. The harvested energy is then applied to move the robotic structure that is able to clean the polluted environment with the help of water-purifying plants that are integrated in the structure.
Caroline Slomp - Recovering the sea’s dead zones
Due to a lack of oxygen in certain areas, the sea has many so-called ‘dead zones’. Professor of Biogeochemistry (at Utrecht University) Caroline Slomp investigates how these dead zones come into being, and whether burying phosphate in the seabed can help to solve this problem. Professor Slomp told more about her field research and her quest for a healthy sea.
Added to tonights Regeneration Biotalk: the Bee Inc project. Local waste wooden design objects support the wild bees in its struggle to survive in city environment areas. Presented by designer Aad Kruiswijk.
