Framer Framed organizes a debate on the occasion of the launch of the landmark issue of the Australian art magazine Artlink, 'Blak on Blak', in co-operation with the AAMU – Museum of contemporary Aboriginal art and the National Museum of Australia. In this issue writers of Aboriginal origin write on contemporary Aboriginal art. The presentation of Blak on Blak is reason for a comparison with the Surinam-Dutch art project Wakaman, in which artists research their own cultural background and ethnicity in art. Focus is the importance of art criticism in their own circles. Various local and historic developments lead to different visions.
Speakers:
Dr. Margo Neale is 'Senior Research Fellow of the National Museum of Australia and principal adviser to the Director on Indigenous Matters'. Furthermore she is 'Adjunct Professor at the Australian National University's Centre for Indigenous History'.
Gordon Hookey is artist and PhD student at the Queensland College of Art in Queensland, Australia.
Daniel Browning is guest editor of the Artlink, Blak on Blak issue.
Tess Allas is Indigenous Editor at the DAAO Dictionary of Australian Artists Online. She was assistant guest editor of Blak on Blak.
Gillion Grantsaan is artist and co-initiator of Wakaman.
Marcel Pinas is artist, born and living in Surinam.
Moderator is Nancy Jouwe, Director of Kosmopolis Utrecht.
