In this new episode of our Nature Morte series, funeral director Susanne Duijvestein and artist Arne Hendriks will have a conversation about human ecology and the disconnection we seem to have from the natural cycle of life and death. We'll talk about mushrooms, death denial, compost, cycles, transience, funerals and pigeons, and find out what those things have to do with each other. Join in!

Susanne Duijvestein

After eleven years in cooperative banking, Susanne Duijvestein switched into the funeral business. Being young, progressive, and independent, she reflects on the ethics and aesthetics in this world, but she also likes to reflect on how we relate to our own transience, what we eventually leave behind on this planet and how we can reclaim a non-commercial funeral culture again. Susanne is curator Nature Morte at Mediamatic.

Arne Hendriks

Arne Hendriks is an artist and researcher on human ecology. He explores the borders of specific cultural values that define our relationship with the planet. His projects include The Incredible Shrinking Man that researches if it is possible to downsize the human species to better fit the earth and Fatberg, the building of an island of fat. As a regular Mediamatic collaborator, he directed several projects to draw attention to our (sometimes twisted) relation with the planet and its resources, like Kool Abundance, The Starvation Experiment, and the building of a holy pigeon tower out of recycled newspapers. In Summer 2020, Arne Hendriks started experimenting to build Pigeon Towers with mycelium waste.

World premiere of Jan van Schaiks film - In the film, one sees Jan van Schaik walking through an urban landscape with an eggshaped basket on his back. He stops on the Zuidas building sight in Amsterdam. He starts to dig in the sand, on a resting piece of land, where a temporary playground has arisen. He digs and digs until there is enough room for the willow twig egg. After he himself climbed into the object, the lid closes and is covered in sand until the only thing you see is the hole on top of the basket. Sadhbh O'Donnell
