Where are mobile games at at the moment, and where are they heading? 13 game developers, journalists, artists and programmers presented their work, and their plans for the future. From platform games to interactive non-smartphone applications in the urban environment, and from RFID and GPS to HTML5.

Ignite

Ignite is run by locals, for locals. Founded in Seattle, the events are held around the world. Ignite is fast-paced and merciless, but most of all they're fun, thought-provoking nights, full of fresh ideas and clever insights. Speakers get five minutes to present their idea. They make use of twenty slides that auto-advance every fifteen seconds. A ruthless moderator will guarantee those five minutes aren't exceeded. Ignite serves as a platform for locals to connect offline and have a drink together.

Leonieke Verhoog and Willempje Vrins

Figurerunning is about being a creative, active explorer, and allows you to draw figures in your city. Leonieke and Willempje recently launched the app at Mediamatic, and we couldn't help but invite them back.

Rafael Rozendaal and Dirk van Oosterbosch

Visual artist Rafael Rozendaal and programmer Dirk van Oosterbosch developed the highly addictive "Finger Battle" game together. It is quite self-explanatory. Oh, and it was recently approved by Apple so you can play it too.

Femke van der Ster (z25)

Femke presented a project she's working on with the z25 foundation. Visual artists and game developers work together to translate poems into games. Ambitious!

Michiel van den Anker

A lot is being said about HTML5. Will it really mean the end of Flash? Is it the future of mobile games? Are we heading towards a truly full dynamic web? Michiel will try to answer a few of these questions.

Tijmen Roberti (Firi Games)

There's a lot about Phoenix, an arcade-inspired mobile game, that's worth discussing. The adaptive AI director and procedural content generator not only allow each player to play at his or her own level, but also means no two games are the same. However, what makes the game truly mobile, is the possibility to build regional high score ranking.

Luc van Donkersgoed (Coding Dutchmen)

Luc is a managing partner at Coding Dutchmen, an agency that focuses on apps for mobile platforms. He’ll be talking about small and big games and investments, and how you can come the next App Store Millionaire.

Mettin Parzinski

Mettin is the programmer behind Capture The Pole, a project by Sanne Meijer, Robin Hartog, Mike van Veenhuizen and Parzinski. Capture The Pole features a pole with an RFID reader. Players swipe the pole and stay logged in until someone else swipes it. The goal is to stay logged in as long as possible.

Christiaan Mutschelknauss

Christiaan will present Spy Who Tagged Me, a distributed private detective game. It allows you to spy on people with hardly any resources and at very low costs.

Lucas Tieleman

Lucas is behind Repudo, an app that combines the real and the virtual world, allowing you to create and play modern day scavenger hunts. Leave a digital present, message or picture behind in the real world. Whoever wants to pick it up has to go to its physical location and claim it.

Matthijs Dierckx

Matthijs is knee deep into games. Before co-founding Control, the leading Dutch publication on game development, he worked as an editor for titles such as PC Zone, GameQuest and PlayNation. Now, besides working on Control, he runs his own publishing company and contributes to Bashers. Matthijs rounded off not only the Ignite, but kind of the whole exhibition, by presenting what he considers the future of games.

Merel van der Woude

Merel is an education designer for Butterfly Works, a studio that co-designs for a better world. She'll be presenting a serious game called Get H2O. This game deals with issues like poverty, corruption, water scarcity, crime and community development.

Location: Mediamatic Bank, Vijzelstraat 68 Amsterdam. A ticket for one evening was €7,-. A 3-day ticket only €15,-.

Mob Fest was part of the Arcade exhibition. Arcade is an expanding collection of old and new games and technologies. Exhibition space meets arcade. The exhibition closed on March 27th. It was open from 13:00 - 19:00 during the week, and on Fridays and Saturdays from 13:00 - 18:00.
