Emin Özmen
Emin Özmen talks about his photojournalistic work and his documentary film 'Witnessing Gezi' during the opening of A Day in the Park.
Emin Özmen was born in Sivas, Turkey in 1985. He studied Physics at 19 Mayıs University in Samsun, before moving on to photography at the Marmara University Fine Arts Faculty in Istanbul.
His first photography album sponsored by HSBC was published with the name of “Anadolu’da İnsan/Human in Anatolia” in 2007. The following publishing in which he compiled photo stories of women who received microcredit within the scope of a programme taking place in 26 cities was also sponsored and issued with the name of “Microcredit Stories in Turkey” by HSBC. As photojournalist in 2008, he started his career in Sabah, a popular Turkish daily newspaper. Meanwhile, he received a degree at media photography and documentary photography in The University of Art and Design Linz. He toured around Europe and created photography works during the period. His work in which he photographed the draught in Somalia in 2011 was published by Turkuvaz Books. In the same year, he had his name heard with his photographs taken in the disaster of Tohoku Earthquake and economic protests in Greece. In the following year, Emin’s works depicting the Syrian Civil War was served and distributed to the international media such as The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, El Pais, BBC by Agence France Press. In 2012, Emin Özmen has been awarded the 2nd prize in the spot news category of World Press Photo and awarded by Turkey Photojournalists Association Special Award. Emin currently lives in Istanbul, Turkey and continues his career in the Sabah newspaper as photojournalist.
