Before forming Sonic Youth with Kim Gordon, Thurston had a band called The Coachmen.

Other early recordings included collaborations with Lydia Lunch. Thurston and Lee Ranaldo played with Glenn Branca in early 80s, and both were featured on his three first symphonies. Also various freeform collaborations with artists such as William Winant, Tom Surgal, Loren Mazzacane Connors, William Hooker and Nels Cline.

In 1995, Thurston released a solo album, Psychic Hearts, on Geffen records. Steve Shelley helped out with drums for this gem. Thurston runs a record label, Ecstatic Peace!, mainly concentrating on releasing unheard no wave music, and is a former editor of Killer! and has written columns and articles for numerous publications and magazines. In 2000, he released his first book, Alabama Wildman, which is a collection of short prose and poems.
