Living Tower Talk #7

Exoten in de Stad

with Arne Hendriks, Thijs de Zeeuw, Teun Castelein, Joël Broekaert, Lonneke Aarts & Ruben Bunder

12 Apr 2024

In the city, various "invasive" species can be found, such as the ring-necked parakeet. Artist Teun Castelein will come to talk more about it. Below, you can see his winning entry for a new artwork in Schegpark. Nature optimist Thijs de Zeeuw and pigeon tower builder Arne Hendriks are hosting this evening. They engage in conversation with culinary specialist on exotics, Joël Broekaert and with Lonneke Aarts, advisor on nature development and invasive species. An evening filled with good conversations and stories. And we will taste a tasty Japanese Knotweed snack prepared and developed by chef Ruben Bunder together with Teun Castelein.

Exoten in de stad - Living Tower Talk 12 April 2024 Teun Castelein's winning entry for a new artwork in Schegpark.

Artist ARNE HENDRIKS has been building pigeon towers of live oyster mushroom mycelium around Mediamatic for 4 years. But what do they actually mean for the city and to what extent do they contribute to our ambition to establish a nature-inclusive relationship with the environment?

TEUN CASTELEIN is an artist known for a wide range of entrepreneurial adventures. He calls himself a 'one-man conglomerate' operating from the city of Amsterdam with the ambition of overtaking the world. His work focuses on themes prevalent in society, particularly concerning how we relate to (social) media and the market. Castelein plays with the idea that everything is expressed in economic value but is also constantly searching for authenticity in human relationships, such as with newcomers, minorities, or Amsterdam residents.

Dancing on the mycelium dance floor -

THIJS de ZEEUW is a landscape architect and nature optimist. He designs environments where both humans and non-humans can live together. He dreams of multi-species societies in which people see animals as other people, just as we do with our fellow homo sapiens. For the past eight years, Thijs has been designing stays for ARTIS. Designing for "a client you can't talk to" has proven to be a consistently fascinating challenge. It has made him more and more aware of the perspective of 'the other'.

JOËL BROEKAERT is restaurant critic for NRC Handelsblad, Holland's leading daily newspaper, culinary columnist for monthly Vrij Nederland, and creator and host of television shows "De 5 smaken van Joël" and "De smaak van Joël".

LONNEKE AARTS is advisor on nature development and invasive species.

RUBEN BUNDER is co-owner of De Vrienden van Bavink Gallery and Chef at Café De Engelbewaarder.

Communal Staff Food

Our Mediamatic family has a ritual of eating Staff Food together as a way not only to nourish our bodies with healthy meals but also to nourish our relationships between colleagues and friends. Our concept for Staff Food revolves around the idea of informal communal dining where we're sharing a meal with friends and family. Our Staff Food menus are a rotation of one-pot wonders made from seasonal plant-based ingredients and packed with international flavors.

The monthly Living Tower Talk, curated together with Thijs de Zeeuw and Arne Hendriks, is a collaborative learning process. It takes us on a journey of discovery where the destination is not predetermined and the course emerges during the conversations.
