When I arrived at Mediamatic as a visual communicator I was looking for my stepping stone into the professional art world. It is safe to say I got what I came for. In the course of 5 months (Jan-June 2022) I worked my way through a variety of aspects within art related exhibition-, workshop- and event production. I am grateful for the trust I have been given by Mediamatic.
Exhibitions
Throughout my time at Mediamatic I worked consistently to preserve our existing exhibitions and art installations. In addition to general maintenance, I created graphic design materials for the aroma lab and exhibitions such as Border Ecologies. However, Prosthetic X by Isaac Monté became my biggest project at Mediamatic. I was involved in everything from creating the floor plan, researching lighting options, designing and printing the visual materials to installing the exhibition itself. After the exhibition opening I kept in contact with the artist and followed up on all updates. I also created exhibition invigilation instructions for the interns at Mediamatic. Working with Prosthetic X was a really positive experience for me as both Isaac himself and my mentor Naomi gave me a free space to explore different solutions and let me get first hand experience of handling valuable artwork and producing an art exhibition.
Workshop
In total I produced four workshops for Mediamatic: Radical Embroidery, Freestyle Kintsugi, Design Your Own Shroud and Observational Plant Drawing. Not only did I get to produce and facilitate them, but I also chose to participate myself as I personally found the topics and concepts very intriguing. When producing workshops, it is important for me that I create a comfortable and inspiring atmosphere for both the instructor and the participants, so I hope everyone who was at the workshops I produced had a nice time and felt well taken care of.
Events
Early on in my internship I got to produce the “Gentle Disco” event. What was special about this one in particular was that the COVID-19 restrictions had just been lifted so it became the reopening of Mediamatic. A nice moment I remember from that event night was my supervisor Naomi standing besides me looking at everyone enjoying themselves and telling me “You did this”. I later went on to produce another Gentle Disco and a Pizza Pecha Kucha event for the Mediamatic staff. I was also fortunate enough to be able to work in production for the Neo Futurist Sin Eaters dinner events, as well as create some of the promotional material for social media.
Merging my strategic design background with exhibition-, workshop- and event production has been really exciting and I'm officially curious to see what else I can do with this combination. I want to say thanks to Jans and Willem for the opportunity and also a special thanks to my mentor Naomi for the support and knowledge she has provided me with. I now feel fully equipped to go on and finish my Master of Design degree at Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia.
