Simon turned his back on a career in Science after completing a Biology degree at Stirling University. He then spent many years as a musician before going on to complete post-graduate studies at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee.

Simon has edited many programmes for broadcast, ranging from arts documentaries to pop promos. He has also edited and collaborated on most video dance works directed by Katrina McPherson. These include 'Pace', 'Sense-8' and the IMZ DanceScreen award-winning 'Moment' , 'The Truth' a 30 minute dance film for Ricochet Dance productions and ‘There’s Something You Should Know'. He is a director of Goat Media Ltd, the Highland-based production company that Simon runs with Katrina.
Simon has made many single screen video art works and projections for live dance performance works. These include collaborations with choreographer Marisa Zanotti in 'Runner', '16/17' and 'Wipe Out'.
In 2000, Simon was awarded one of the Year of the Artist residencies, creating digital work at a furniture shop in Edinburgh. In 2004 he was New Dynamics artist in residence in the Highlands creating new videos, site specific installations and a new Alt-W funded web work 'Ardnamurchan Zillij'. In 2006 he was shortlisted for a Creative Scotland award.

Katrina McPherson and Simon Fildes’ collaborations also include two works made for www.hyperchoreography.org, interactive video dances made for the web; a series of gallery and web works for the New Media Scotland 2001 'Remote' residencies project in the Highlands of Scotland; and the international award winning Move-me.com project. A touring interactive video dance installation and website. This is a co-production with Ricochet Dance Productions working with leading international contemporary dance artists. Other 2005 projects include ‘Girlband’ in which a group of around 30 young people from all over East Lothian helped to make and star in their very own dance film; and ‘Nothing and Everything’ a creative arts project initiated and delivered by Occupational Therapy Day Services at Lynebank Hospital In Fife, Scotland. Katrina and Simon have created a 5 screen video work shown in January 2007.

More recently their focus has shifted to collaborating with legendary British improviser and teacher Kirstie Simson to explore the nature of improvising with video. They are working on creating a Videodance / documentary as well as developing a series of workshops to explore this territory.

Simon is currently part-time lecturer and researcher in Media Arts and Dance at the School of Media Arts and Imaging, University of Dundee.
