Living Tower Talk #9

It takes more than Listening to Hear

with Harpo 't Hart, Sheng-wen Lo, Thijs de Zeeuw and Arne Hendriks

28 Jun 2024

The city is a noisy place. Not only for and by people. Animals also make the necessary noise and are bothered by us. But what about trees or fish? What about soil or mycelium? What sound do they make? What are they talking about? We explore it during this evening with presentations by artists and specialists.

Listening artist Harpo 't Hart will teach us to understand the language of the North Sea Canal. Sheng-wen Lo will take us through his fascinating experiment Extendable Ears. He is trying to discover exactly what animals hear, a unique opportunity to experience the world through the ears of a cat for once. Hosts this evening are artist Arne Hendriks and landscape architect Thijs de Zeeuw.

HARPO 't HART is a composer and performer. Theatre was an outlet and a stage for his experiments in electronic music which he further developed in several sound installation works. These works sparked scientific questions that led him into research into the relation of sounds to physical things.

Artist ARNE HENDRIKS has been building pigeon towers of live oyster mushroom mycelium around Mediamatic for 4 years. But what do they actually mean for the city and to what extent do they contribute to our ambition to establish a nature-inclusive relationship with the environment?
