Kevin, Eva´s son, is the key piece of the book. His behavior throughout the book closely resembles that of a sociopath. He displays no affection or moral responsibility towards his family or community. The book describes how Eva makes unsuccessful attempts to enter Kevin's mind and to identify some reason for his detachment and his actions. The book has a master ending, not only for the action, but also for the description of how this ending affects the characters
